PROGRAM OVERVIEW
PERFORMING ARTS
Music Class
Students in Kindergarten Prep through 5th grade participate in regular music classes throughout the week. Students study classical pieces and composers, learn how to read hymn music from a hymnal, are taught how to sing harmonies in a choral setting, and experience the joy of square dancing! By the end of 5th grade students will also have extensive experience playing a recorder and ukulele.
Performances
Lower School students have multiple opportunities to perform each year. They students participate in grade-level showcases, the annual Christmas program, and Grandparents' Day. Upper School students perform both on and off campus on multiple occasions.
Upper School Opportunities
In Upper School, students have the opportunity to participate in elective classes including choir, band, and drama. Each of these classes allows students to learn and refine skills in music and performance. Seniors cap off their history studies with Fine Arts Survey, looking at the world through the Visual Arts, Music, and Literature.
VISUAL ARTS
Lower School
The focus in this stage is on learning the “grammar” of Art. Students learn art by rotating through drawing, painting, mixed media, and architecture year after year. Projects for each grade level are chosen carefully so that they integrate with specific units happening within the homeroom classroom. For example, students may study hieroglyphics and ancient Egyptian art in art class while they are learning about ancient Egyptian in history in their homeroom.
Upper School
As our young artists grow, they continue to cycle through media, adding in more professional materials. They add to our school’s physical environment through mural painting and decorative ceiling tiles. PCA also offers instruction in drafting and stage design. Seniors cap off their history studies with Fine Arts Survey, looking at the world through the Visual Arts, Music, and Literature.
